Naan Avanillai - Music Review
Naan Avanillai is supposedly a movie focussing on a man's protests against a society which blames him for the wrongs he did not do...but how true is that is totally put to the sword by the stills which shows a man going to kiss 5 beauties to death. Anyway on to the album which is of more interest.
Vijay's Anthony strength is his arrangements with the synthesizer/keyboard....you rarely hear actual instruments being used but the lack of is replaced by some unconventional styles of using the the synthesizer.
The first song kakha kakha is supposedly the title song of naan avanillai which takes some lyrics from kaaka kaaka ganapathy kaaka, palam neeyappa and the lyrics are twisted to give it a manmadan feel. The song has a rhythm which sounds like a crossover between the techno music used for action sequences in english films and club-party songs. The surprising part of the song is it the whole arrangement of the song has no pattern..it just changes suddenly to give it a listenable twist and with the percussions totally sounding contradictory(koothu percussions for palam neeyappa?) The song is certainly not one for the layman or for those who prefer soft music but still gets credit for some different twists.
Nee Kavidhai is a song bordering between romance and lust with some catchy singing by the female lead singer. This song finally proves vijay antony has his own style of melodies...the instrumentation and tune style is so unorthodox that it glues you to the song even more. The whole instrumentation of the song is made up of sounds that just add to the lusty fervour. Amazing song and certainly a chartbuster this one.
Ean Enakku seems to be a simple melody with calmly strung guitar bits in the start but slowly taken over by the singers to give a dew-like song. The orchestration is pleasing on the ears with the thavil and mild strings in the background. Watch for the second interlude with its english lyrics which peps up the melody abit more....not as amazing as the first one but certainly a melody to be cherished.
Macha Kanni is a song which gives off obvious looks of a item number. The lusty and vulgarity is all packed into the song with no compromise. Not a song for you to cherish and more situational...the highlight of the song is the IR-style interludes for such songs with the trumpet.
Then Kudicha has a haunting start which looks like its going to be a melody but is immediately taken over by a tribal like stanza and that leads on to the rest of the song. The song shows yet again vijay's anthony style of showing a complicated tune with so many twists in one stanza....the shift between melody and kalyanam-styled melody is interesting. Listenable but wunt be recognised much due to its situational focus.
A Krishna devotional song usually sung to commemorate his early days is remixed in radha kaadhal. The song makes use of the carnatic overtones to give a hip melody and the background instruments add charm to its unusual orchestration. The lead singer really brings out the best in this song and listen to the rap bits which gives it a different tempo. Also watch out for the ending guitar bits. Brilliant and certainly a song not to be missed.
